Allman Brothers Band Sues UMG for Over $10M

     MUSIC NEWS - From the legal file; The members of classic, southern rock band, The Allman Brothers Band are suing Universal Music Group's UMG Recordings for over $10 million for missing royalties from their compact discs sales and digital downloads services.   The lawsuit is asking for payments from sale of the rock group's songs recorded for their early label; Macon, GA based Capricorn Records, for the period 1969 to 1980 when the band had their biggest hits like, "Jessica," "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider."  Band members from that period, Greg Allman, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson, Butch Trucks and Dickie Betts are named as

 

plaintiffs in the lawsuit.   The lawsuit was filed on monday in NYC's Manhattan federal court and said UMG "refuses to pay Plaintiffs at the correct royalty rate for its digital exploitation of the Capricorn Masters," including from compact discs, digital downloads and ringtones. The contract dates to their 1985 agreement between ABB and Polygram, which Universal bought, that guaranteed the band half of profits from sales of records by third parties such as Apple's iTunes or any other commercial usage that was not specified in the agreement, the lawsuit said.  No comment from the group's manager, Bert Holman.
